Ancestors in Dixie

These are some of the people that came before me.  They represent four-generations of my family that settled in the North-Central area of Alabama.  I would like to show you their lives in picture format.

I restored some of the pictures---if you would like to see what they looked like originally, click on the picture.
Bearden
These are the Beardens---they lived in the small community of Boaz, Alabama.  The picture looks to be from the Twenties.  My Great-Grand Mother is standing Second from the right.  Her name was Lydia Ann Bearden and she was born in 1883.  Seated, are her parents, General Bearden and his wife, Alice Ann.
This photo is dated 1964--the four Bearden Sisters approximately 40 years after the original photo (left). My Great-Grand Mother is second from the Left.

These are the Barney Barnes' Family of Chandler Mountain, in St. Clair County of Alabama.  The closest city was Steele, Alabama. My Great-Grand Father (Ivy Barnes) is one of the lap children.  The family settled on Chandler Mountain in the 1880s, from South Carolina.  Barney Barnes was on the founding charter for Steele Methodist Church---he would be my Great-Great-Grandfather.  His wife was named Clarsa. (sorry, I don't know all the specifics ).  The Church still survives and thrives--in fact, I was Christened there.
My Great-Grandfather (Ivy Barnes) and his favorite mule, Ader.

The Ivy Barnes Family

My Great-Grandparents (Ivy and Lydia) got married, and had two offspring.

It's not hardly a glamour picture. These are my Great-Grand-Parents (Ivy & Lydia), their Daughters which are my Grandmother (Nancy Irene) and Great-Aunt (Willene).

This picture was taken on a dirt road, on Chandler Mountain in St. Clair County, AL. It is believed the picture was taken around 1945.

This is my branch of the family. My Grandmother, and the Grandfather that I never knew.

A Birthday Party!
This was a Birthday Party for Dyanne. She is the daughter of Nancy and Bill Jones, and also happens to be my Mom. Standing beside her is her cousin Jimmy in the blue jacket.

I colorized this picture and added Grandfather Ivy to the background.

Bessie Lydia Ivy

This is Ivy and Lydia Barnes in 1956. In the above pictures, you can see almost their entire lives in pictures. When I was around 4 or 5, I begged my Mother to allow my Great-Grandparents to keep me while she worked. That was when I really came to love them and respect them. They both died in their 80s which was around 1972. I had the joy to know them for only 12 years, but I know they were awesome people.

Missy!
Willene and Jimmy Dyanne (my Mom) and Jack
This is the Aunt that I mentioned in my "About Me" page that would always accidentally buy twice the groceries that she needed, so that she could help me and my Mom when we were broke. She was married to a wonderful guy named Jack. My Uncle Jack was a builder, a craftsman and at one time the chief foreman over the construction of Disney World in Florida. He had a great sense of humor and taught me many things, for example, he taught me the importance of completing a project in your mind before you ever make the first cut, or hammer the first nail. I use what he taught me when I design a webpage---usually, in my mind the page is already completed before I design the first graphic.

Me and my Dad
Me & Mom
These are some of my favorite pictures. Me and Mom in the Day Lily Patch. What could be more Southern? I colorized the picture, turned the daylilies into drawings and then re-drew them adding traditional blossom color and greens. It seems to me that there is a point after much work that photographs become more works of art than works of photography.
The Steadying Arm is that of Lydia. Apparently, this was my first Birthday and from my lofty position, I was surveying the cake, food and presents.

These are some vintage restored pictures of me. The one at the right was used as my Christmas Card in 1999.
In Art History, you may call this my Casper period. I believe this, too, is a first, my first Christmas.
